Ultramarathon Goal Unlocked: George Mountain Ultra Trail

trail runner at George MUT

There’s a moment in every runner’s journey when a “someday” goal becomes a plan. For one of the athletes on Team Performance Project, that moment happened at the George Mountain Ultra Trail race winding through the Outeniqua Mountains in George, South Africa — and I want to tell you about it, because it might be the nudge you’ve been waiting for.

But first, some exciting news: registration just opened for the George Mountain Ultra Trail (MUT by UTMB), and if a big mountain goal has been sitting in the back of your mind, this is your sign.

What makes George MUT special

The Mountain Ultra Trail — MUT by UTMB — is a UTMB World Series event, the first of its kind on the African continent. That means it’s not only one of the most beautiful races you’ll ever run; it’s also a place where your effort counts toward something bigger.

At UTMB World Series events, finishers earn Running Stones — the qualifiers you accumulate to enter the UTMB World Series Finals in Chamonix, France, the sport’s most iconic stage. So while you’re chasing your own goals on the trails of George, you’re also building your path toward the mountains of the French Alps. Few races let you do both in a single, stunning weekend.

And the setting? The Outeniqua Mountain Range is breathtaking. When you’re up there, you’re surrounded by full 360° views of mountains in every direction. It feels less like a race and more like a wonderful escape — the kind of place that reminds you why you fell in love with trail running in the first place.

Laila’s story: six months, one enormous goal

This year, Team Performance Project athlete, Laila, ran her very first ultramarathon at George MUT. Six months earlier, it was just a goal on paper — the kind of dream that feels equal parts thrilling and impossible.

So we got to work. Together.

We built her mileage slowly and intentionally, respecting where her body was and where it needed to go. We spent more and more time in the mountains, because the trails ask different things of you than the road ever will. We got her comfortable with trail-specific gear — using poles on the steep climbs, carrying a full pack, learning to trust her equipment. And we practiced race-day nutrition until it was second nature: real food, hydration, and electrolytes, dialed in over months so that nothing on race day would be a surprise.

Step by step, week by week, the impossible started to look inevitable.

Her motivation for choosing George was simple: the mountains. She knew how stunning the Outeniqua range is, and she loved those 360° mountain views. It did not disappoint. When I asked her about the race afterward, she didn’t lead with how hard it was or how much it hurt. She told me she had fun the whole time.

And then she crossed the finish line — an ultramarathoner. She’d set out to finish her first ultra, and she did. She’ll tell you it was life-changing, and I believe her, because I’ve watched it happen again and again: a big, scary goal, met with patient work, transforms not just what you can do but how you see yourself.

This could be your transformation

Here’s what I know after years of coaching: the athletes who surprise themselves aren’t the ones with the most natural talent. They’re the ones who commit to a goal and then trust the process of building toward it, one honest step at a time.

If a first ultra — or your next big one — has been living in the back of your mind, George MUT is a remarkable place to make it real. The views alone are worth the trip. The Running Stones are a bonus. And the person you become in the months of training beforehand? That’s the part that lasts.
